The quad chamfer is a two-sided bevel that can be used to create the impression of an inside corner. This 3dsmax 2016 tutorial will teach you how to model and texture this unique 3D modeling technique. At first glance, it may seem like nothing more than a simple bevel applied to one edge of an object, but the quad chamfer has many hidden benefits. It allows for non-symmetrical geometry, making it ideal for organic modeling; its angle can make certain objects appear more three-dimensional; and its design creates crisp corners that other forms of chamfering do not provide. The quad chamfer is a unique and useful modeling technique, so we will use it throughout this tutorial to create artistic, organic shapes. In the first part of this 3dsmax 2016 tutorial series, you will learn how to start a new file in 3DMax, set up the quad chamfer, and then apply its cuts on some basic shapes. In the second part of this tutorial series you will learn how to model a form with a quad chamfer. Starting on a new file in a new face cylinder with Edge Guides selected and under Create on the fly menu, select Quad Chamfer from the Modify panel. You can also choose Other from the same menu and then select Modeling. There is a lot to learn in the quad chamfer tutorial, so we will dive into all of its parts and nuances here. After deciding on the edges to be cut, select them in the Layout view. To create a quad chamfer, the four edges must be inserted at an angle where they cross each other. To change the position of the edges in the quad chamfer, select them and hold down Ctrl and drag them to a new position. If you want to move only one of the edges, hold down Ctrl and Alt and drag that individual edge. The quad chamfer is created entirely within 3DS Max; no segments are attached to it. The four edges we will be using in this tutorial will be inserted at 0 degrees (or straight up), 90 degrees (outside corner) and -90 degrees (inside corner). You will notice that at this point, the quad chamfer resembles a rounded box with four faces on each side; its geometry is similar to an extrusion. The quad chamfer can be edited as a box but the extrusion is not available as a modifier. The quad chamfer can be edited as a box or a poly object, but the extrusion is not available as a modifier. To edit it as a poly object, click on Face from Quad Chamfer from Quad Chamfer from the Modify panel. With Face from Quad Chamfer selected, click on Poly from Quad Chamfer in Edit Poly. When editing as one or the other, you will notice that they affect different aspects of the quad chamfer’s geometry – the box affects its outer dimensions and the poly object affects its inner dimensions. eccc085e13
